4:50 PM - 5:00 PM: Welcome – SBDC Host – Sunny Verma

  • Purpose: Warm welcome, acknowledgment of sponsors, introductions of speakers, and the agenda

5:00 PM - 5:20 PM: The Road to Entrepreneurship and the Role of the SBDC

Presenter: Sunny Verma, Lehigh University SBDC

Purpose: Discuss the foundational role of an entrepreneur and outline the services and resources offered by the SBDC

Topics Covered:

    • Key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs and the entrepreneurial journey
    • Role and Mission of the SBDC and Summary of the Services and Resources  

5:20 PM - 5:50 PM: Rule of the Road – Legal Considerations for Small Business

Presenter: Matthew Konchel, Esquire – Konchel & Associates, P.C.

Purpose: Help small business owners understand key legal requirements and reduce risk when starting and operating a business. 

Topics Covered:

    • Choosing the right business structure (LLC, sole proprietorship, corporation) and why it matters 
    • Required registrations, licenses, and permits 
    • Key contracts and agreements (clients, vendors, partnerships) 
    • Common legal risks and compliance considerations (taxes, liability, employment basics) 

5:50 PM – 6:20 PM: Rule of the Road – Accounting and Bookkeeping Considerations for Small Business

Presenters: Kristopher DePaolo, CPA – CEO, Werner & Company CPAs

Purpose:  Help small business owners understand effective accounting & bookkeeping practices to support compliance & informed decision-making.

  • Topics Covered:
  •   Setting up a basic accounting system (cash vs. accrual, tools/software) 
  •   Tracking income, expenses, and maintaining accurate financial records 
  •   Understanding key financial statements (profit & loss, balance sheet, cash flow) 
  •   Best practices for staying organized and preparing for taxes
