BCEDC Annual Meeting 2024: Fostering Innovation in Career and Technical Education

On September 18, 2024, the Northampton Valley Country Club in Richboro, Bucks County, hosted the Bucks County Economic Development Corporation's (BCEDC) Annual Meeting. This year’s event brought together members, the Board of Directors, colleagues, and friends of BCEDC for an insightful meeting centered on the critical theme of Career and Technical Education (CTE).

With education and workforce development at the forefront, the meeting featured presentations from the three directors of Bucks County’s CTE programs. These leaders provided a deep dive into how CTE is shaping the future workforce, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills, and offering students a direct pathway to career success.

Highlights from the Presentations

Dr. Herrera, Executive Director of Upper Bucks County Technical School (UBCTS), reported on the remarkable achievements at UBCTS, where enrollment rose from 658 to 925 students over the past decade, with many more eager to join. UBCTS offers a diverse range of technical programs, from advanced manufacturing to healthcare and information technology, equipping students with essential skills and invaluable real-world experiences, such as law students engaging directly with local legislators. Notably, UBCTS has established groundbreaking partnerships with industry leaders like NASA and General Dynamics Electric Boat, enabling students to work on significant projects, including manufacturing components for the International Space Station. Dr. Herrera emphasized the significant return on investment in CTE, highlighting that every student graduated with industry-recognized certifications totaling over 1,900 across the school, along with 446 additional certifications in essential skills through partnerships with community colleges. Exceptional students like Eric Fosbenner and Natalia Yondura exemplified this success, earning prestigious accolades in the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Competition. In conclusion, Dr. Herrera urged the community to invest in CTE, recognizing its vital role in cultivating a skilled workforce that drives economic growth.

Dr. Mark Covelle, Administrative Director at Middle Bucks Institute of Technology (MBIT), shared that his school, like many CTE centers across the commonwealth, is experiencing record interest and enrollment. He highlighted MBIT's record achievements, with more students medaling in regional and state events and more inducted into the National Technical Honor Society than ever before, stating, "When we connect students with their passion, their outcomes improve." Dr. Covelle encouraged the audience to boldly support CTE by participating in Occupational Advisory Councils or hosting students in work-based learning experiences. He urged attendees to view CTE through a modern lens, where advanced manufacturing, robotics, and safety are hallmarks of the educational environment. Dr. Covelle concluded by inviting members to tour their facilities, emphasizing that "seeing is believing" in CTE.

Henry DeGeorge, Administrative Director of Bucks County Technical High School, discussed the differences between a comprehensive technical high school and a shared-time CTE program. He introduced the Bucks County pre-apprenticeship program, a collaboration among the three technical high schools, providing students with tools and connections in their chosen technical fields. He stressed the integration between local businesses and technical high schools, emphasizing the importance of soft skills to help students become "good employees."

Closing Remarks and Q&A Session

39 3Bob Cormack, Executive Director of BCEDC, remarked, “This was a first in Bucks County, having all the technical schools present their programs at the same venue. All three directors’ comments resonated with attendees, highlighting how they address the needs of business and industry through workforce development. The audience now understands that each school is truly a workforce development center, creating curriculums to support tomorrow’s youth in a CTE setting. This collaboration enhances our ability to prepare students for the workforce and strengthens ties with business leaders. Congratulations to each of you and your staff for paving the way for training and programs that will lead to family-sustaining incomes for your students.”

Following these enlightening presentations, Greg Krug, President of Lampire Biological Laboratories and a BCEDC Board member, facilitated an engaging Q&A session. Greg guided a thought-provoking discussion between the speakers and the audience, fostering an environment of collaboration and knowledge sharing. Attendees had the opportunity to delve deeper into the topics presented, asking insightful questions and gaining further clarity on the future of CTE in Bucks County.

This interactive session not only highlighted the importance of CTE but also showcased the commitment of local leaders like Greg to engage with the community in meaningful ways.
