The TMA has also provided all Bucks County high schools and colleges with "No Texting While Driving" signs that schools placed at parking lot exits to remind student drivers of Pennsylvania’s anti-texting law that went into effect in 2012. PECO Customers Help Pennsylvania Reach Milestone for Recycling Energy-Guzzling Appliances

Customers recycle more than 35,000 appliances through PECO Smart Appliance Recycling

PECO customers have recycled more than 35,000 energy-guzzling refrigerators and freezers through PECO Smart Appliance Recycling, helping the state of Pennsylvania reach a total of 200,000 recycled appliances during the last five years. The recycling of older, inefficient appliances supports efforts to help reduce customer electric usage across the state. By recycling 200,000 appliances, customers have reduced their annual energy usage by about 200 million kilowatt-hours.

PECO Smart Appliance Recycling is part of PECO Smart Ideas, the company’s full suite of energy efficiency and rebate programs. Since launching in October 2009, PECO Smart Ideas has helped customers save more than $268 million in energy savings and rebates, and reduced customer electric usage by more than 1.2 billion kilowatt hours. This energy savings has the same environmental impact as removing 120,595 cars from the road or planting 1,384,610 trees.

PECO Smart Appliance Recycling provides customers a $35 rebate for recycling their older working refrigerator or freezer, and provides complimentary removal and recycling of the old appliance. Older appliances require as much as three times more electricity to operate than models built to meet current efficiency standards. In addition to the rebate, by removing the refrigerator or freezer, customers can save up to $150 a year in operating costs.

"We are proud that PECO customers have made such a significant contribution in helping the state reach this monumental achievement," said Kathy Lentini, PECO’s director of Energy and Marketing Services. "This is yet another achievement for PECO Smart Ideas, which provides tips and rebates to help every customer save energy and money."

Scheduling a refrigerator or freezer pickup is easy. PECO customers can call 1-888-5-PECO-SAVE or visit www.peco.com/smartideas. Appliances must be in working order when the crew arrives to pick them up for recycling.

Units picked up through the program are transported to an appliance recycling facility operated by JACO Environmental. JACO safely removes hazardous materials from the old energy guzzlers, reclaiming 95 percent of the materials in the appliances for reuse in manufacturing new products. Even the foam insulation is safely incinerated to generate electricity.

Based in Philadelphia, PECO is an electric and natural gas utility subsidiary of Exelon Corporation (NYSE: EXC).  PECO serves 1.6 million electric and 497,000 natural gas customers in southeastern Pennsylvania and employs about 2,400 people in the region.  PECO delivered 76.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas and 37.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2012.  Founded in 1881, PECO is one of the Greater Philadelphia Region’s most active corporate citizens, providing leadership, volunteer and financial support to numerous arts and culture, education, environmental, economic development and community programs and organizations.
