BCEDC BUSINESS HAPPENINGS

Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA) has approved Megawholesale, Inc., Bristol Township to borrow $375,000. The loan will be used to purchase a building located at 1135 Cedar Avenue. The project will create twenty-five (25) jobs in an Enterprise Zone. The total project cost of $1,250,000. Megawholesale, Inc. will utilize the property for warehousing and distributing cigars, tobacco, and other general merchandise. The new 27,000 square foot facility with 18 foot high ceilings will allow the company to stock-pile merchandise thus giving them a direct link to the manufacturers and an ability to supply their customer base with better pricing and a quicker delivery time.

STRATEGIC EARLY WARNING SYSTEM (SEWN)

Alibaba—Threat or Opportunity

A share in the Chinese e-commerce web site, Alibaba, is being offered to US investors in the very near future. For many small to mid-sized businesses, this is the equivalent of Godzilla showing up in your neighborhood.

Why? Because unlike many other e-commerce sites, Alibaba not only offers products, it offers parts and represents the local Chinese manufacturers of those parts. It provides an easy, inexpensive vehicle for larger manufacturers to access the low-cost labor and parts of the Chinese manufacturing economy. Alibaba has made it easier for American business to “off shore” products.
